VIDEO Large slab of ice falls from sky in Walnutport.jpg_11508177_ver1.0_640_360WALNUTPORT, Pa. – There wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

But out of nowhere last night, Brian Cavanaugh and his family out of Walnutport heard a big crash.

“There were pieces of ice and sleet all over the road, the biggest piece we found was on the opposite side near that cherry tree,” Cavanaugh said.

The biggest chunk was about the size of a soccer ball.

“Meteorologically speaking the first thing you think is a hail storm,” Dan Skeldon said.
WFMZ Meteorologist Dan Skeldon ruled that out quick.

“The nearest storms were near Maryland, Virginia,” he said.

Plus no one else reported falling ice.

“There’s something else called a megacryometeor. It’s basically a large single hailstone. They actually coined a term for it because it has been observed in the past 10-20 years or so,” Skeldon said.

It’s very rare though.

“It could be ice falling from an airplane,” Skeldon added.

Either accumulated ice or, less appealing, from the plane’s bathroom.

Cavanaugh says planes fly over his Walnutport farm frequently.

That was his first guess. He’s just glad it fell where it did.

No one was hurt and there was minimal property damage.

He’s out about 200 bucks after replacing part of his shed’s roof.
